A new kitchen, social, meeting and lecture space within a design and research centre in rural Buckinghamshire. Grainge Rider were asked to design and construct the fit-out of the space from raw materials in part to showcase what is possible using the facilities on site. The amenity created is between domestic and commercial standards in order to cope with high volumes of visitors throughout the year.
Durability, ease of use and practical maintenance drove the design whilst experimentation with machines, processes and materials informed the detail. We used casting & glazing techniques, traditional woodworking methods, power tools, CNC milling machinery, 3D printing and kilns to create a variety of seamless hardwearing surfaces and objects.
EXE WATER SPORTS
Stage Planning Permission Granted Client Exe Water Sports (Association) Budget £3.5M Area 2000 sqm
A phased redevelopment providing new facilities for a Community Amateur Sports Club based in Exeter, Devon. Work commenced with an intensive briefing process with the client team, user groups, the local community and local authority.
The site is located within a conservation area close to where England's oldest ship canal joins the River Exe.
The ground floor enclosure houses the clubs' boats and equipment, it is permeable to daylight and designed as a freely floodable and drainable envelope due to the proximity of a canal, river and flood plain. Glazed openings and perforated brickwork offer views into the storage spaces and extend up to the first and second floor levels, animating staircases and circulation spaces.
The project currently has planning permission and awaits the remaining capital commitment required to progress to construction.

Renovation and extension of a terraced Victorian family home in Haringey Ladder.
Responding to the tight space under the existing pitched roof and our clients' desire to maintain existing ceiling heights we developed a rectangular 'pod' like design conforming to the volumetric limits defined in Permitted Development Rights.
A large central roof light and carefully placed glazing allows natural light down into the existing house and offers views of the surrounding tiered roof scape and corbeled brick chimney stacks.
This project will be on site soon.

Renovation and extension of a Victorian terraced house in Walthamstow.
With a small budget our client aims to construct as much of the project himself. The brief was to design a simple-to-construct extension maximising daylight and flexibility within the existing house.
Reusing the demolished brickwork, a new side extension in character with the existing rear elevation is proposed.
Renovation and extension of a post-war semi-detached house in a conservation area in Exeter, Devon.
The existing house contains a series of small internal spaces with little natural light. Working alongside our client we developed a scheme providing large, flexible and interlinked spaces full of light.
A generous new staircase and light well 'dropped' into the narrow gap between the two properties allows floor levels to be enlarged and simplified. At ground level open plan floor space extends along the shared boundaries sheltering and connecting with a small walled garden.
Externally, the existing and proposed structures are unified with a warm natural lime render, a material traditionally used in the local area. A sculptural cluster of roof forms, textured render and glazed openings create an intriguing presence on the street.
RECYCLED OLYMPIC STAIRCASE
Stage Complete Client Confidential
Grainge Rider were involved in the manufacture of a sculpture procured by The Mayor of London's 'Incredible Installations' for the London 2012 Olympics. It was installed outside the Houses of Parliament prior to and remained for the duration of the games. As the sculpture was due for dismantling post-games we opportunistically collected the screen-printed plywood flags to recycle them into something permanent and valuable.
Using CNC machinery and collaborating with structural engineers we turned the flag of each competing nation into a 'puzzle piece' that interlocked forming a vivid and dramatic cantilevered staircase.
Screen printed plywood and dovetail joints.
